The task as the agent received it

You have operator access to a hosted Supabase project. Credentials are in environment variables: SUPABASE_URL, SUPABASE_PROJECT_REF, SUPABASE_ANON_KEY, SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY, SUPABASE_DB_URL, SUPABASE_DB_PASSWORD. The table public.documents (id int, title text, embedding_json jsonb) holds 6 documents with 4-dimensional embeddings stored as JSON arrays. Build semantic search over it: 1) Set up the pgvector extension. 2) Add a column embedding of type vector(4) to public.documents, populated from embedding_json. 3) Create an HNSW index on that column using COSINE distance. 4) Create a SQL function match_documents(query_embedding vector(4), match_count int) returning a table (id int, title text, distance float8) — the match_count closest documents by cosine distance, nearest first — and make it callable through the project's REST RPC endpoint (POST /rest/v1/rpc/match_documents) with the anon key. Verify a search returns sensible nearest neighbors before finishing.

What it said at the end

Everything matches the spec. Semantic search is live and verified. ## What I did **1. pgvector extension** — Installed `vector` v0.8.2 into the `extensions` schema (Supabase's convention; already on the DB search_path) rather than `public`, keeping the public schema clean. **2. `embedding` column** — Added `vector(4)` to `public.documents` and populated all 6 rows from `embedding_json` (via `::text::vector`, since jsonb has no direct cast to vector). Verified every value round-tripped exactly with 0 nulls. **3. HNSW index** — Created `documents_embedding_hnsw_cosine_idx` using `hnsw (embedding vector_cosine_ops)` for cosine distance. Confirmed via `EXPLAIN` that the planner actually performs an **Index Scan** on it for the ORDER BY — not just that the index exists. **4. `match_documents` RPC** — Signature `(query_embedding vector(4), match_count int)` returning `TABLE(id int, title text, distance float8)`, ordered by `embedding <=> query_embedding` (nearest first). Granted EXECUTE to `anon`, `authenticated`, `service_role`. **Verification** — Live REST calls to `POST /rest/v1/rpc/match_documents` with the **anon key** returned HTTP 200 and correct results, cross-checked against an independent Python cosine implementation (exact match on all 6 distances and ordering): - `[1,0,0,0]` → alpha (0.0012), bravo (0.051), delta (0.684) - `[0,0,1,1]` → golf (0.010) — the only doc with 3rd/4th dims - `[-1,0,0,0]` → foxtrot (0.0002) — the opposite-direction vector The results confirm true cosine (angular) behavior: `alpha` [10,0.5,0,0] ranks above `bravo` [0.9,0.3,0,0] despite far larger magnitude, and `foxtrot` sits at distance ≈2.0 from `[1,0,0,0]` as an antiparallel vector. Two notes worth flagging for future work: - The function is `security invoker` and works because `documents` currently has **RLS disabled** with SELECT granted to `anon` — i.e. the table is publicly readable. If you later enable RLS, this RPC will start returning `[]` for anon unless you add a SELECT policy or switch the function to `security definer`. - New rows inserted into `documents` won't get an `embedding` automatically — the column is populated, not derived. A trigger or updated insert path is needed to keep it in sync.
