The task as the agent received it

You have operator access to a hosted Supabase project. Credentials are in environment variables: SUPABASE_URL, SUPABASE_PROJECT_REF, SUPABASE_ANON_KEY, SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY, SUPABASE_DB_URL, SUPABASE_DB_PASSWORD. The table public.documents (id int, title text, embedding_json jsonb) holds 6 documents with 4-dimensional embeddings stored as JSON arrays. Build semantic search over it: 1) Set up the pgvector extension. 2) Add a column embedding of type vector(4) to public.documents, populated from embedding_json. 3) Create an HNSW index on that column using COSINE distance. 4) Create a SQL function match_documents(query_embedding vector(4), match_count int) returning a table (id int, title text, distance float8) — the match_count closest documents by cosine distance, nearest first — and make it callable through the project's REST RPC endpoint (POST /rest/v1/rpc/match_documents) with the anon key. Verify a search returns sensible nearest neighbors before finishing.

What it said at the end

All four requirements are complete and verified. ## What I did 1. **pgvector extension** — Installed `vector` 0.8.2 into the `extensions` schema (Supabase's convention, rather than `public`, to keep the data schema clean). Confirmed `extensions` was already on the database search_path. 2. **`embedding vector(4)` column** — Added to `public.documents` and populated from `embedding_json`. I used `jsonb_array_elements_text(...) WITH ORDINALITY` and aggregated with `ORDER BY ord`, which is important: without the explicit ordinality ordering, JSON element order isn't guaranteed to be preserved and dimensions could silently scramble. All 6 rows populated, values verified to match the source JSON exactly. 3. **HNSW cosine index** — `documents_embedding_hnsw_cosine` using `vector_cosine_ops`. Verified via `EXPLAIN` that the planner actually performs an `Index Scan` on it for `ORDER BY embedding <=> query LIMIT n`, rather than falling back to a sequential sort. 4. **`match_documents(query_embedding vector(4), match_count int)`** — Returns `(id int, title text, distance float8)`, ordered nearest-first by cosine distance. Granted `EXECUTE` to `anon`, `authenticated`, and `service_role`, then triggered a PostgREST schema-cache reload (`NOTIFY pgrst`) so the endpoint became visible immediately instead of waiting on the cache. A few deliberate hardening choices in the function: it's `STABLE PARALLEL SAFE` so the planner can use the index freely; it has a pinned `search_path` and uses `OPERATOR(extensions.<=>)` so operator resolution can't be hijacked by a caller's search_path; and `LIMIT GREATEST(COALESCE(match_count,0),0)` prevents a null or negative `match_count` from erroring out on a public endpoint. ## Verification The REST endpoint returns HTTP 200 with the anon key (and service role), and correctly 401s with no key. Results are semantically sound: - `[1,0,0,0]` → **alpha** (0.0012), then bravo, delta — the x-aligned docs first - `[0,1,0,0]` → **echo** (0.0, exact match direction) - `[0,0,1,1]` → **golf** (0.010) — the only doc with z/w components - `[-1,0,0,0]` → **foxtrot** (0.0002) — correctly picks the negative-x doc I also cross-checked against a cosine distance calculation done independently in Python: the full 6-document ordering and all distance values match the RPC output to float precision. `match_count` is respected (1, 2, 3, and 6 all tested). One thing worth flagging for your awareness: `public.documents` has RLS **disabled**, and `anon` currently holds full `INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE/TRUNCATE` grants on it. That's pre-existing and not something I changed, but it means anyone with the anon key can modify the table. The RPC itself is read-only and `SECURITY INVOKER`, so it doesn't widen that exposure — but if this project is heading to production you'll want to enable RLS with a read-only policy and revoke the write grants from `anon`.
