The task as the agent received it

You have operator access to a hosted Supabase project. Credentials are in environment variables: SUPABASE_URL, SUPABASE_PROJECT_REF, SUPABASE_ANON_KEY, SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY, SUPABASE_DB_URL, SUPABASE_DB_PASSWORD. The table public.documents (id int, title text, embedding_json jsonb) holds 6 documents with 4-dimensional embeddings stored as JSON arrays. Build semantic search over it: 1) Set up the pgvector extension. 2) Add a column embedding of type vector(4) to public.documents, populated from embedding_json. 3) Create an HNSW index on that column using COSINE distance. 4) Create a SQL function match_documents(query_embedding vector(4), match_count int) returning a table (id int, title text, distance float8) — the match_count closest documents by cosine distance, nearest first — and make it callable through the project's REST RPC endpoint (POST /rest/v1/rpc/match_documents) with the anon key. Verify a search returns sensible nearest neighbors before finishing.

What it said at the end

Everything is in place and consistent — all 6 rows have embeddings matching their `embedding_json` source, and `anon` has execute permission. ## Summary Semantic search is live on `public.documents` and verified end-to-end. **What I did:** 1. **pgvector extension** — Installed `vector` 0.8.2 into the `extensions` schema, following Supabase's convention (rather than `public`, which keeps the extension out of your API-exposed schema). 2. **`embedding vector(4)` column** — Added and populated from `embedding_json` by unnesting the JSON array with `WITH ORDINALITY`, which guarantees element order is preserved (a plain `jsonb_array_elements` + `array_agg` does not). All 6 rows populated, verified against the source JSON with zero mismatches. 3. **HNSW cosine index** — `documents_embedding_hnsw_cosine_idx` using `vector_cosine_ops`. Confirmed via `EXPLAIN` that the planner actually performs an `Index Scan` on it for `ORDER BY embedding <=> query` queries, rather than falling back to a sequential sort. 4. **`match_documents` RPC** — Returns `(id, title, distance)` ordered nearest-first via the `<=>` cosine operator. Granted `EXECUTE` to `anon`, `authenticated`, and `service_role`, and confirmed working over `POST /rest/v1/rpc/match_documents`. **Verification results** (nearest neighbors are semantically sound): | Query | Top result | Reasoning | |---|---|---| | `[1,0,0,0]` | `alpha`, `bravo` | both x-dominant | | `[0,1,0,0]` | `echo` (distance exactly 0) | identical direction | | `[0,0,1,1]` | `golf` | only doc with z/w components | | `[-1,0,0,0]` | `foxtrot` | only doc with negative x | I also confirmed distances are always ascending, `match_count` is respected, over-requesting (`100`) safely returns just the 6 available rows with `foxtrot` last at distance ≈2 (opposite direction, correct for cosine's [0,2] range), and both anon and service_role keys work. **Two engineering notes worth flagging:** - **The function needs `SET search_path`.** The `anon` role has no `search_path` configured (only the `postgres` role includes `extensions`). Because pgvector lives in `extensions`, the `<=>` operator would not resolve when PostgREST calls the function as `anon`. I pinned `search_path = public, extensions` on the function, which fixes this and is also the safer practice for hardening against search_path injection. - **`embedding` is not auto-maintained.** New or updated rows won't get an embedding from `embedding_json` automatically, and `embedding IS NULL` rows are excluded from results. If `embedding_json` will keep changing, the durable fix is either a `BEFORE INSERT OR UPDATE` trigger or making `embedding` a generated column — happy to add that if you'd like.
