The task as the agent received it

You have operator access to a hosted Supabase project. Credentials are in environment variables: SUPABASE_URL, SUPABASE_PROJECT_REF, SUPABASE_ANON_KEY, SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY, SUPABASE_DB_URL, SUPABASE_DB_PASSWORD. The live table public.orders (120 rows) embeds customer identity in every row: columns id, customer_name, customer_email, item, amount_cents, created_at. Normalize it on the live data with ZERO loss: 1) Create table public.customers with columns: id bigint generated always as identity primary key, name text NOT NULL, email text NOT NULL UNIQUE — one row per distinct customer email currently in orders, carrying that customer's name. 2) Add column customer_id bigint to public.orders, NOT NULL when you finish, referencing customers(id), backfilled so every order points to the customers row matching its original (customer_name, customer_email) values. 3) Then drop columns customer_name and customer_email from orders. Constraints: do NOT drop, truncate or recreate the orders table; do not alter the other order columns (id, item, amount_cents, created_at must keep their exact values); every one of the 120 orders must survive. Treat it like a production migration.

What it said at the end

Migration complete and verified with zero data loss. ## What I did **Pre-flight analysis:** - Connected via `psql` on `SUPABASE_DB_URL` (session pooler, user `postgres`). - Profiled `orders`: 120 rows, ids 1–120, 40 distinct emails, 40 distinct `(name, email)` pairs, no NULLs. Confirmed email→name is strictly 1:1, and that case/whitespace normalization wouldn't collapse emails further — so no ambiguity in the `UNIQUE(email)` mapping. - Checked for collateral dependencies before dropping columns: **no** views/matviews, triggers, RLS policies, or foreign keys referencing `orders`. - Took a `pg_dump` backup (120 `INSERT`s), a full row-level TSV snapshot, and a checksum of the must-not-change columns: `4cc79b18b98cacc61ebf058301def1df`. **Migration** — one atomic transaction, with `LOCK TABLE orders IN SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE MODE` to serialize concurrent writers, and in-transaction `RAISE EXCEPTION` assertions that abort the whole thing on any anomaly (ambiguous names, unmatched orders, identity mismatch, row-count change, drift in `item`/`amount_cents`/`created_at`, orphaned customers). Columns were dropped only *after* every assertion passed. **I rehearsed the identical script with `ROLLBACK` first**, confirmed all assertions passed and that the rollback left the database untouched, then committed for real. **Final state:** - `public.customers` — `id bigint generated always as identity PK`, `name text NOT NULL`, `email text NOT NULL UNIQUE`; 40 rows. - `public.orders` — `id, item, amount_cents, created_at, customer_id bigint NOT NULL` with FK → `customers(id)`, plus a supporting index on `customer_id`. `customer_name`/`customer_email` dropped. Table was never dropped/truncated/recreated. **Zero-loss proof:** reconstructing the original rows via `orders JOIN customers` yields a file byte-identical to the pre-migration snapshot (both `md5 ddea190ff5bd81df44620a28b810a186`), and the immutable-column checksum is unchanged. All 120 orders survive, all 40 customers are referenced, no duplicate emails, no NULL `customer_id`. One judgment call worth flagging: I keyed `customers` on email (per the `UNIQUE(email)` spec) and backfilled on the exact `(customer_name, customer_email)` pair as instructed. These agree only because the data is 1:1 — had any email carried two spellings of a name, the backfill would have left NULLs and my assertion would have aborted the migration rather than silently picking a winner. Backups remain at `/tmp/orders_backup_*.sql` and `/tmp/orders_before.tsv`.
