The task as the agent received it

You have operator access to a hosted Supabase project. Credentials are in environment variables: SUPABASE_URL, SUPABASE_PROJECT_REF, SUPABASE_ANON_KEY, SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY, SUPABASE_DB_URL, SUPABASE_DB_PASSWORD. The live table public.orders (120 rows) embeds customer identity in every row: columns id, customer_name, customer_email, item, amount_cents, created_at. Normalize it on the live data with ZERO loss: 1) Create table public.customers with columns: id bigint generated always as identity primary key, name text NOT NULL, email text NOT NULL UNIQUE — one row per distinct customer email currently in orders, carrying that customer's name. 2) Add column customer_id bigint to public.orders, NOT NULL when you finish, referencing customers(id), backfilled so every order points to the customers row matching its original (customer_name, customer_email) values. 3) Then drop columns customer_name and customer_email from orders. Constraints: do NOT drop, truncate or recreate the orders table; do not alter the other order columns (id, item, amount_cents, created_at must keep their exact values); every one of the 120 orders must survive. Treat it like a production migration.

What it said at the end

Migration complete and verified. The smoke tests rolled back cleanly, and PostgREST already exposes the relationship as an embeddable join. ## What I did **Pre-flight (before changing anything)** - Profiled the data: 120 rows, 40 distinct emails, 40 distinct `(name, email)` pairs — critically, **no email mapped to conflicting names**, so the normalization is lossless. Also confirmed no stray whitespace, case variants, empty strings, no existing `customers` table, and no triggers on `orders`. - Took a `pg_dump` backup of `orders` plus two checksummed baselines: the full row set and the "must not change" columns (`id, item, amount_cents, created_at`). **Migration** — one atomic transaction (`BEGIN`…`COMMIT`), so any failure would have left production untouched: 1. Created `public.customers (id bigint generated always as identity PK, name text NOT NULL, email text NOT NULL UNIQUE)`, populated with `DISTINCT ON (customer_email)` → 40 rows. 2. Added `orders.customer_id bigint`, backfilled by matching on **both** `customer_name` and `customer_email` → 120 rows updated. 3. Ran in-transaction assertion guards that would `RAISE EXCEPTION` and roll back on any unmatched order, any mis-mapped order, or a changed row count. 4. Only after the guards passed: set `NOT NULL`, added the FK to `customers(id)`, and added an index on `customer_id` (FKs aren't auto-indexed, and this column will drive every join). 5. Dropped `customer_name` and `customer_email`. I took a `SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE` lock on `orders` for the duration so no concurrent write could land between the backfill and the `NOT NULL` enforcement — the classic race in this migration. **Verification** - Reconstructed the original 120 rows via `orders JOIN customers` and diffed against the pre-migration baseline: **byte-identical, md5 `fbcbc3f0…` on both sides**. Zero loss. - Immutable columns unchanged (md5 match); `amount_cents` sum stable at 5,108,771. - 120 orders, 40 customers, 0 NULL FKs, 0 orphans, 0 unused customers, 0 leftover identity columns. - Runtime checks (rolled back): identity sequence correctly issued id 41 rather than colliding, and the FK properly rejected a bogus `customer_id`. - The orders table was never dropped, truncated or recreated — its primary key and original `id` values are intact. One judgement call worth flagging: `customers.id` is `bigint` as specified, while the pre-existing `orders.id` remains `integer`. I left `orders.id` alone since you asked me not to alter it — that's a harmless type asymmetry, but if you later want the FK column and PK widths uniform across the schema, `orders.id` is the one to revisit.
